The lessons children learn on the Little League® diamond go far beyond the diving catches and double plays. Each one helps shape them into who they are after they hang up their cleats for the last time, building them into stronger individuals ready to step up to the plate in life.
A firefighter with Citizens Hose Company Number 5 in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, Brock Brungard learned the importance of stepping up to the plate for those in need while playing as a kid for Keystone Little League in Clinton County, Pennsylvania. During a beach vacation in New Jersey with his girlfriend’s family, a strong rip current pulled several individuals into the water, causing them to panic and in need of help. Throughout the day, Brungard jumped into the dangerous current and, with the support of his girlfriend’s family, helped both kids and adults get back to the sandy shore safely.
To recognize Brungard for his lifesaving efforts and willingness to be a leader in his community, Little League International invited him to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Game 4 of the 2026 Little League Baseball® World Series, Presented by T-Mobile, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. As he made his way out to the mound, Brungard received a standing ovation, thanking him with applause and cheers.
While in Williamsport, Little League sat down with Brungard for an “Inning Break” interview to learn more about his lifesaving efforts, the lessons he learned as a Little Leaguer®, and why it is important to carry those lessons beyond your days on the diamond.
