An outstanding effort by Shingo Tomita hoisted Japan to an 18-11 win in six innings over Mid-Atlantic on Sunday at Lamade Stadium.
Tomita blasted two home runs for Japan. Tomita went 3-4 in the game with two RBIs and four runs scored. Tomita homered in the second and third innings.
Japan was in a difficult situation in the second inning before it recovered for the win.
Masafuji Nishijima racked up six RBIs on four hits for Japan. He doubled in the second inning, homered in the third inning, and singled in the fifth and sixth innings.
The two teams combined for 29 runs and 30 hits, including 12 extra base hits. There were six pitchers used in the game as the two managers searched for any way to finish it off.
Japan starter Daiki Fukuyama struggled, allowing five in zero innings, but the bullpen gave up six runs and the offense banged out 22 to pick up the slack and secure the win for Japan.
Nobuyuki Kawashima got it done on the hill on the way to a win. He allowed one run over five innings. Kawashima struck out four, walked one and gave up two hits.
Japan easily handled Mid-Atlantic pitching as six hitters combined for 17 hits, 15 RBIs and 16 runs scored.
Home runs for Japan came when Kengo Tomita homered in the second inning, Yugo Aoki homered in the second inning, Nishijima homered in the third inning, and Tomita homered in the second and third innings.
Jaden Henline took the loss for Mid-Atlantic. He allowed nine runs in four innings, walked one and struck out one.
The top of the first saw Japan take an early lead, 2-0. Japan got a spark in the form of a Aoki single, before before Kabu Kikuchi doubled, plating Aoki and Tomita.
Mid-Atlantic survived Japan’s surge and put up 10 runs of its own in the first. Mid-Atlantic scored on an RBI single by Chayton Krauss, an RBI single by Ethan Phillips, a walk by Jake Cubbler, a home run by Dylan Rodenhaber, and a three-run home run by Henline.
The game’s last lead went to Japan thanks to a third inning rally that saw four runs cross the plate on two solo home runs.
Japan increased its lead with five runs in the sixth. A triple by Tomita ignited the offense,, scoring Aoki.
