- Living in Space: Lessons for Living on Earth - Talk by Dr. Jitendra Joshi
- The Museum
- 2pm - 3pm
- Join us for this special presentation by Dr. Jitendra Joshi, NASA Chief Technologist, Exploration.
Living in space for extended durations has a lot of challenges, both for the crew and the crew support systems. Keeping astronauts healthy and fit for duty requires overcoming the deleterious effects of microgravity on the human body. The life support systems that maintain the living environment for the crew offer their own challenges. As mission durations exceed from days to months it becomes essential to recycle the air astronauts breathe, the water they drink and even the food they eat! In order to make long-duration space missions more affordable and human space flight more sustainable, systems have to be efficient in terms of their of their mass, power and volume requirements thus making it an imperative to reduce the ecological footprint of a spacecraft. There are systems level lessons learnt from space missions that can be translated to Earth, for spaceship Earth also has limited resources. Dr. Joshi's talk will draw parallels between human space travel and lessons for resource recycling on Earth.
