Rule 2.00 – Definition of Terms

A FAIR BALL is a batted ball that settles on fair ground between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that is on or over fair territory when bounding to the outfield past first or third base, or that touches first, second or third base, or that first falls on fair territory on or beyond first base or third base, or that, while on or over fair territory touches the person of an umpire or player, or that, while over fair territory, passes out of the playing field in flight.  NOTE:   A fair fly shall be adjudged according to the relative position of the ball and the foul line, including the foul pole, and not as to whether the fielder is on fair or foul territory at the time such fielder touches the ball.

A FOUL BALL is a batted ball that settles on foul territory between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that bounds past first or third base on or over foul territory, or that first falls on foul territory beyond first or third base, or that while on or over foul territory, touches the person of an umpire or player, or any object foreign to the natural ground.  NOTE: (1) A foul fly shall be adjudged according to the relative position of the ball and the foul line, including the foul pole, and not as to whether the fielder is on foul or fair territory at the time such fielder touches the ball.  NOTE (2):  In Tee Ball, the ball is foul if it travels less than 15 feet in fair territory from home plate.  The ball is also foul if the batter hits the tee with the bat.

Play 1: The ball hits in foul territory, hits a pebble and bounces into fair territory and is fielded there... FAIR OR FOUL?   Suppose it isn’t fielded in fair territory but comes to rest there?  FAIR OR FOUL?

Play 2:
The ball hits in fair territory, but spins into foul territory and comes to rest, or is touched in foul territory.  FAIR OR FOUL?

Play 3:
The ball hits in foul territory, spins forward and comes to rest directly on home plate.  FAIR OR FOUL?

Play 4:
The ball hits the batter’s leg while he/she is in the batter’s box, bounces into fair territory and is fielded there.  FAIR OR FOUL?

Play 5:   There is a runner taking his/her lead off third (JR/SR/BG) base in foul territory.   A line drive hits him/her and then bounces fair, where it is fielded.  FAIR OR FOUL?

Play 6:   A line drive hits the pitchers plate without touching a player and caroms into foul territory between home and third and bounces into the seats.  FAIR OR FOUL?

Play 7:   Ball rolls directly along the foul line, touches a corner of the base and then Rolls foul, never passing the bag.  FAIR OR FOUL?

Play 8:   Ball bounces in front of the base, crosses directly over the bag and lands in foul territory beyond the bag.  FAIR OR FOUL?

Play 9:   Line drive zooms over third base in fair territory but lands on the foul side of the left field line.  FAIR OR FOUL?

Play 10:   Ball hits fair, spins foul, hits a pebble, comes back into the diamond, crossing directly over the bag and comes to rest in fair territory.  FAIR OR FOUL?

Play 11:   Ball rolls inside the line (fair), then into foul territory before reaching the bag, but after it passes behind the bag it hits a pebble and goes fair again, settling behind the bag.  (Don’t say this is impossible.  It happened in a game recently).  FAIR OR FOUL?

Play 12:   Third baseman, standing in fair territory, reaches out into foul territory and touches a line drive which is definitely on the foul side of the line.  However, he/she touched it when he/she was in fair territory.  So…. FAIR OR FOUL?

Play 13:   Left fielder goes into foul territory for a long fly.  At the last second the wind carries the ball into fair territory.  While standing in foul territory, he/she reaches into fair territory to touch and touches the ball.  Remember now he/she is standing in foul territory.  So…. FAIR OR FOUL?
