WEST ENDS CENTRAL'S HOPES

Matt Swims took the hill for Cypress, California and impressed most people.

"Swims was one of the best pitchers we’ve seen all postseason," said Tom Meyer, manager of the Central Region champion Jenison, Michigan.

Swims struck out seven in six innings and allowed only two hits going into the sixth. Michigan put up a fight in the last inning by getting three hits, but the Cypress defense turned a key double play to end Michigan’s season.

"My fastball, curveball, and fork ball were all working tonight," Swims said. "That double play gave me big sigh of relief. I usually just worry about the hitters and let the defense do their job."

The West offense was provided by Nathan Lara and his two run homer in the third. That was enough as Cypress went on to win 4-1.

"I was surprised to even start," he said. "I just tried to get a base hit. I’m glad I contributed to our win tonight."

"I ask my teammates for just one run, and then I try to do the rest," Swims said.

Swims got what he asked for and continued the team’s hopes of making far in the tournament.

Coach Meyer said they had enough hits to get the runs in, but he still thinks they can do better. In order to do better, he mixed up his lineup tonight by having Cory Campbell lead off.

"It didn’t hurt to change the lineup," he said. "Cory was getting on base more and I figured Pat (Casa) could bunt him over."

For the Central, their season comes to a bitter end. They did manage to score one run in the sixth on three base hits. Derek Stempin went 2-3 and stole a base.

"I thought we would compete with everyone," Coach Meyer said. "We just didn’t have the pitching that the other teams had. Luck was also needed, but we didn’t get any. I am disappointed with the performance, but I’m really proud of my kids. They can play some ball."

The West will play the South tomorrow night for the right to play the East in the United States Championship Game.

"Our backs are against the wall," Meyer said. "It’s a must win situation from hereon out."
