The Mexico champions from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, beat the Asia-Pacific champions from Taoyuan, Chinese Taipei, Monday night at Volunteer Stadium, 4-3.
The third inning is what allowed Mexico to take the win and eliminate the Asia-Pacific team.
Mexico center fielder Fernando Bernavides started a 3-run rally by hitting an RBI single just through the glove of Asia-Pacific shortstop Meng-Chun Sung, allowing pitcher Felix Diaz to score. Bernavides and Joel Turrubiates scored on an error by the pitcher later in the inning, putting Mexico up, 4-2.
Both teams had a solo homer in the first inning. Asia-Pacific third baseman Chun-En Lin hit one as well as Mexico right fielder Omar Cervantes. Cervantes' home run tied the game early, 1-1.
“It affected me a little bit, but I said to myself just shake it off, shake it off. This stuff happens and I settled,” Mexico pitcher Diaz said after Mexico’s home run in the first inning.
Asia-Pacific did score two other runs one by second baseman Ting-Yu Liu who hit an RBI single in the top of the second inning and by first baseman Chun-Hsiao Chen who hit another RBI single in the top of the fourth, 4-3.
