The Latin American team from Aguadulce, Panama, defeated the Canada champions from Vancouver, British Columbia, on Sunday at Volunteer Stadium, 8-3.
Latin America shortstop James Gonzalez hit a grand slam in the bottom of the second inning after Carlos Flavio hit a home run to start the inning, putting Canada down in a tough hole, 6-0.
Latin America pitcher Edisson Gonzalez started out the game with three consecutive strikeouts, which set the bar high for the Canadian champions. Latin America struck out 13 by the end of the game.
James Gonzalez from Latin America hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning, bringing Edisson Gonzalez home with him and extending their lead, 8-1.
“It felt very good to hit the second one,” James Gonzalez said.
Canada did manage to score two runs by Cortez D’Alessandro and Thomas Neal in the fourth and fifth innings leaving the score at 8-2 after five.
“We thought we could work around their strengths and weaknesses,” Canada manager Vito Bordignon said, “but the strikeouts killed us.”
Latin America hit two Canadian players in a row during the top of the sixth inning and walked in a run.
Canada drops into the losers' bracket to play the Caribbean on Monday at Volunteer Stadium while Latin America awaits Sunday's Japan/Asia-Pacific winner on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Lamade Stadium.
