The fans of the Parsippany, N.J., Little League team were cheering all night as the Mid-Atlantic regional champs defeated the Northwest regional champs from Gresham, Ore., at the Little League World Series at Lamade Stadium on Saturday night, 10-4.
The top of the fifth inning secured the win for the Mid-Atlantic when second baseman Daniel Ruggiero hit a 2-RBI double to start a 4-run rally, bringing Alex Cavaluzzo, Emil Matti, Ruggiero, and Bener Uygun home.
“The bats were alive tonight,” Mid-Atlantic manager Mike Ruggiero said. “In five years we’ve never lost two games in a row so we knew we would comeback.”
Mid-Atlantic shortstop Emil Matti smashed a lead-off home run in the first inning, which set the bar high for the Northwest. Mid-Atlantic right fielder D.J. Pico then hit a 2-run homer in the top of the second inning, which brought Sarang Amin home, followed by another home run by Matti, putting the Northwest in a 5-0 hole.
“When I saw it hit off the bat I knew it was a home run,” Pico said.
Northwest tried to come back when right fielder Ezra Samperi hit a 2-RBI single in the second inning and first basemen Tyler Linch hit another 2-RBI single in the third inning, making it a 5-4 game, but put nothing on the board after that.
"They started swinging the bats like we wanted to tonight,” Northwest manager Jason Trickel said.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.
Keep watch for the Mid-Atlantic team as they play the winner of Sunday's West/Southeast game on Monday in Lamade Stadium at 4 p.m. The Northwest is eliminated, but will play Middle East-Africa champions Lugazi, Uganda, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Lamade Stadium in a consolation game.
