Friday's first game of the day brought a show down between Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico with Canada winning, 13-9, in a game that featured a lot of offense.
In the first inning, Canada was able to take a dominating lead by going through a total of 13 batters and scoring seven runs.
Mexico was able to make it on the board with a RBI single by Ramon Ballina, sending Fernando Benavides to home plate.
Canada was able to further its lead in the top of the second inning with an RBI single by Matteo Porcellato. In the bottom of the inning, Mexico closed the deficit with a 2-run home run by Gerardo Moreno, followed shortly by a 3-run home run by Eduardo Abrego. Ballina added to his first inning hit with a home run in the second. Erasmo Gonzalez then tied the game for Mexico with an RBI single, 8-8.
Carson Ho and Steven Moretto both scored and helped Canada regain the lead in the third inning, making the score 10-8.Canada was able to defensively stop any Mexico runs with a diving catch in left center field from Thomas Neal.
In the fourth inning, Canada's Nicholas Williams had an RBI single to put Mexico in a 3-run hole. Ballina came through with his second home run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the Canada deficit to 11-9.
Canada scored its final two runs in the sixth when Cole Dalla-Zanna and Matteo Porcellato were walked home.
Canada advances in the winners' bracket on Sunday while Mexico drops into the losers' bracket on Saturday. They play the respective winner and loser of Friday's Latin America/Middle East-Asia game.
