Curacao ace
Tharick Martines struck out 10 in his complete game victory over
Saugus, MA in the consolation game of the 2003 Little League World
Series Sunday at Volunteer Stadium.
Martines allowed
one-run on one hit to give his team a 6-1 victory over the New England
champions and claim third place at the 2003 summer classic.
“We were very motivated in this game
because it was for third place,” said Curacao assistant coach
Michelangelo Celestina through an interpreter.
A team from Curacao finished third for the
third year in a row.
Massachusetts
starter Michael Scuzzarella fell into trouble in the first. The
junk-ball pitcher struggled to find his control and after Kevin
Moesquit scored on a one-out single by Czenvic Rojer, Rojer scored on
three consecutive wild pitches by Scuzzarella. “Scuz” struck out Jorge
Provacia with the bases loaded late in the first to escape any more
damage.
Scuzzarella found himself in a tight spot again in the fourth inning.
The 4-foot-10 pitcher surrendered three consecutive hits to start the
inning, and a sacrifice fly and three-run Jeandre Perreira home run
later, the score was 6-0.
With his team in a six-run hole, New
England manager Rob Rochenski opted to go to his towering six-foot
righty, Matt Muldoon. Muldoon worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief
before handing the ball off to Joseph Kasabuski, who worked a one-hit
sixth inning.
Saugus could
simply not catch up with Martines’s fastball, which was clocked at
near 75 mph. “I
was wild today,” Martines said through his coach. “But I pitched
good.” The
Massachusetts team was able to put together a run against Martines in
the fifth. With one out, Craig Cole singled up the middle to break up
Martnes’ no-hitter, and move David Ferreira (who reached on a walk) to
third. Ferreira broke up Martines’ shut-out when he scored on a ground
out by Anthony DiSciscio.
The consolation game for the second year
in a row pitted a New England team and Curacao team. Worcester, MA
lost to the Pariba Little League 9-1 in the 2002 Series.
