ELITE GROUP OF VOLUNTEER UMPIRES NAMED FOR 2000 LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL WORLD SERIES
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Selection to be a member of the Little League Baseball World Series umpire staff is an honor for an elite group whose experience and proficiency rank them among the best volunteer umpires in the world.
These umpires have gained valuable experience over the years in local league play leading to the regional championships, at which point invitations are offered to those who meet the standards of the Little League World Series umpire. For their dedicated service they receive no pay and they are not reimbursed for travel expenses. Yet, for every Little League volunteer umpire, to be selected for the World Series umpire staff is a dream come true.
Below is a list of the selected umpires for the 2000 Little League World Series (Aug. 20-26), with hometown, number of years of Little League umpire service and occupation:
EASTERN REGION
Tom Shiel (Warwick, R.I.); 28 years; insurance application coordinator.
Craig Lugovoy (Wilmington, Del.); 22 years; printer.
CENTRAL REGION
Babe Glumack (Hibbing, Minn.); 30 years; sales.
Peter Lemos (Hammond, Ind.); 31 years; sales, retired maintenance supervisor.
SOUTHERN REGION
Skip Simpson (St. Petersburg, Fla.); 13 years; automobile technician.
Mike Wilson (Senoia, Ga.); six years; welder.
WESTERN REGION
Geoffrey Shiu (Hercules, Calif.); 20 years; certified massage therapist, retired mechanical
engineering technician.
Gary Yoshinaga (Carson, Calif); 25 years,sales.
CANADA REGION
William Fedchun (Windsor, Ontario, Canada); 10 years; retired school teacher.
LATIN AMERICA REGION
Jose Alicea (Cayey, Puerto Rico); 15 years; sales.
FAR EAST REGION
Liang Chi Yuen (Hong Kong, People's Republic of China); 10 years; police
armorer.
