Road Show 2004: Little League Regional, International Staff Hold Clinics

Three staff umpires from Southern Region Headquarters (Skip Simpson, Bob Bouton, and Dewey Hudman) presented a clinic to umpires in Columbia, S.C., recently. The clinic was hosted by South Carolina District 1 Administrator Forest Thomas.
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (Feb. 9, 2004) – In a version of the Little League Baseball and Softball Road Show, clinics and seminars have been held this past fall and winter around the country. Instructional programs have been held in several U.S. states for district administrators, local league officers, umpires, managers and coaches recently.

“For many years, if a volunteer wanted to attend a Little League clinic or seminar and speak one-on-one with a member of the Little League International staff, in most cases they had to go to a regional center,” said Joe Losch, vice president of operations for Little League International. “We still have clinics at the regional centers, but taking some of them on the road means more people will be able to attend.”

The presentation, "A Year in the Life of Hometown Little League" was given at the clinic in Columbia to league officers and district administrators. It was provided by Jennifer Colvin, senior assistant director at the Southern Region Headquarters, and Lance Van Auken, senior communications executive at Little League International. Dan Kirby, director of risk management, presented the ASAP program's benefits.

The on-the-road presentation for league officials and district administrators is called, “A Year in the Life of Hometown Little League,” in which a fictional league is followed throughout an entire year. The league encounters all the usual challenges (and a few you haven’t thought of), and finds the best way to overcome them.

Umpire clinics on the road are particularly helpful, since they not only teach the umpire the latest techniques, rule changes, etc., but they also teach the umpire how to become the teacher back in his or her local league. This results not only in having more umpires, but better trained umpires.
