Little League International Mourns the Passing of Sportscaster Chris Schenkel

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (Sept. 12, 2005) – Little League International joins the worldwide sports community in mourning the passing of Chris Schenkel. A sportscaster for more than six decades, Mr. Schenkel covered a wide array of events, including the 1963 Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.  He passed away on Sunday at the age of 82.

Mr. Schenkel’s radio and television career was highlighted by several pioneering broadcasts. He was the first to cover the Masters Tournament on television; the first to call a college football game coast to coast on ABC; and the first to serve as a live sports anchor for the Olympics. In 1963, he did the play-by-play of the Little League World Series championship game, won by Northern Little League of Granada Hills, Calif., 2-1, over Original Little League of Stratford, Conn.

Mr. Schenkel was inducted into 16 halls of fame, including the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters and College and Pro Football halls, and he won an Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1993.

Mr. Schenkel is survived by his wife, Fran, two sons, a daughter and several grandchildren.
