springers2-152Meet the Springers

George Springer Jr. and his friends grew up playing ball in the empty sandlots of Bristol, Conn., in the early 1970s. He had never heard of Williamsport. He didn’t know much about Little League®. But, a police officer and long-time Forestville (Conn.) parent-confessions150I Called Out an Umpire and Ended Up Being Thrown Out

My son’s team won their pool in District play, and moved on to face the winner of another pool. The team we were going up against was from a neighboring town, a team we knew well. Even though all the kids from both teams belonged to the same school district and were friends, when it came to Little League®, they were our main District rivals. The kids enjoyed playing against each other – the parents, not so much. We always got too intense, but, for the most part, we kept things in check. This one time, though, I took things too far.

dearll152Dear Little League®: An Open Letter from a Parent of a Little Leaguer® and Travel Baller

My son has played Little League® for the last four years. My son also plays travel ball, and I know there is some level of discussion among parents out there about the pros and cons of both types of baseball and softball. I don’t want to get into the debate about what brand of play has more talent, or what program is better structured, and respected, but rather the most important difference to my family.

I have been an active volunteer with North Central Little League in Milwaukee, Wis., since my two boys were old enough to play tee ball in 2005. I was their coach for the next 11 years. I thought it would be the most rewarding thing I could do for my baseball-loving boys.
LLMatters152Why Little League® Matters

In a time when competition for our children’s time is intense – school-related activities, a rich variety of sports options, and even a variety of choices for youth baseball and softball – it’s fair to ask why Little League matters in today’s world. The answer speaks less to how children find ways to exercise, and more to the challenges that will face them as they grow up in an increasingly complex world.

Kids should play Little League® for three reasons. Ranked in level of importance, they are 1) To have fun, 2) To make friends, 3) To play baseball or softball. The Little League experience is so much more than what happens on the field, and parents play an incredibly important role in making sure their Little Leaguer® and his or her fellow teammates enjoy themselves as much as possible.
bleachers150Don’t Be a Bleacher Coach

Go to any youth game, no matter the sport, and it’s all but guaranteed to see parents trying to coach their child from the stands. Some are more subtle with the way they try to get their kid’s attention; maybe with a short whistle or a quick hand wave.
parent-confessions150My Facebook Posts Almost Ruined the Season

It started with a slight dig toward the manager. After a win where my son played the minimum requirement, I posted on my Facebook page: Nice victory! Hats off to the regular players! Go team!
