Jin Roy Ryu, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Poongsan Group and a longtime trustee of the Little League® Foundation, was honored with the Peter O’Malley Distinguished Little League Ambassador Award. Mr. Ryu received the award at the 26th Little League International Congress in Minneapolis, Minn.

From 1996 to 2011, Mr. Ryu was a distinguished member of the Little League Foundation. The foundation was dissolved in 2011. “Mr. Ryu was a valued member of the Little League Foundation for 15 years and he has broadly promoted the mission of the Little League program throughout his native Korea,” said Stephen D. Keener, President and Chief Executive Officer of Little League International. “His belief in the ideals of Little League and his commitment to expanding the program make him a worthy and well-deserving recipient of the Peter O’Malley Award.”

First given in 1992, the award is named in honor for the former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Peter O’Malley, the award’s first recipient. He served as a trustee of the now dissolved Little League Foundation. The award recognizes an individual who has made a contribution to the advancement of the Little League program both domestically and abroad. Past recipients include President George H.W. Bush, Stan Musial, and President George W. Bush.

Along with his duties as Chairman and CEO of PMX Industries Inc. and Poongsan Holdings Corporation, Mr. Ryu also serves as the Vice Chairman of The Federation of Korea Industries, the Vice-Chairman of the Korea-U.S. Economic Council, the Korea Defense Industry Association, the Federation of Korean Industries, and the Korea International Trade Association. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Seoul National University.

Mr. Ryu is a trustee of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and was instrumental in coordinating the appearance of President George W. Bush at the 25th Little League International Congress in Lexington, Kentucky. President Bush is also a recipient of the Peter O’Malley Distinguished Little League Ambassador Award, which he received at the previous Little League International Congress in 2010.

With the support of Mr. Ryu, President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush hosted several “Tee Ball on the South Lawn” events, which invited hundreds of young Little Leaguers® to play ball at the home of the first family.

Mr. Ryu supports a number of philanthropic organizations worldwide. A trustee with The First Tee organization, his commitment and generosity helps to provide educational programs that build character and instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. He too is member of the America’s Promise Board of Directors, the Korea Exchange Bank (KEB) Foundation and the Korea Foundation, and is the Chairman of the Pyongsan Scholarship Foundation and the Pearl S. Buck Foundation Korea.

“Mr. Ryu is humble and reluctant to accept adulation, but it is important for him to be recognized for his efforts on behalf of Little League around the world,” said Mr. Keener. “For many years, his unwavering support of the children and volunteers in our program has had a profound influence on the long-range outlook of Little League. We are proud and privileged to call him a friend and honored to present him with this award.”
