As Little League® celebrates its 75th Anniversary at the 2014 Little League Baseball® World Series, the league representing the Caribbean Region has won its way to compete in South Williamsport. In Freeport, Bahamas, Miguel Luzunaris Little League from Humacao, Puerto Rico, captured the banner as Caribbean Region Champions with the 14-3 win, defeating Elrod Hendricks West Little League from St. Thomas, representing the U.S. Virgin Islands, on Friday, July 25. This will be back-to-back Little League Baseball World Series with a team from Puerto Rico representing the Caribbean Region.

“Puerto Rico is the home to so many great local Little League programs,” said Patrick Wilson, Little League Baseball and Softball Senior Vice President and International Tournament Director. “We are excited to have the Little Leaguers from Humacao here in South Williamsport in August.”

This is the first back-to-back appearances by Puerto Rico teams since 1971 and 1972, and only the second time that Puerto Rico has accomplished back-to-back trip to South Williamsport in the 68-year history of the Little League Baseball World Series. The 2013 Caribbean Region Champion, Samaritana Little League from San Lorenzo, went 1-2 in the Little League Baseball World Series, with their win coming against the Australia Region. This will be the first time a team from Humacao has advanced to the World Series, and the ninth trip for a team from Puerto Rico. Caparra Little League from San Juan made the commonwealth’s first trip to the Little League Baseball World Series in 1959.

At this year’s region tournament, the team from Humacao went 5-1, scoring 67 runs while only allowing 14. Liga Infantil y Juvenil Miguel Luzunaris had to bounce back from an early loss to the team from St. Thomas, the same league they defeated in the championship game. They averaged more than 11 runs per game during their Region Championship run. Learn more about the Caribbean Region Tournament.

The Caribbean Region Champions will face the Australia Region Champions on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 5 p.m. at Volunteer Stadium, airing on ESPN2. On Friday, June 6, Perth Metro Northern Little League from Perth, Australia, won the Australia Region Championship in Gold Coast, Australia. All games at the Little League Baseball World Series will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks, the Watch ESPN app or ABC.

The 68th Little League Baseball World Series begins on Thursday, Aug. 14 in South Williamsport, Pa., with the Championship Game scheduled for 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 24, airing on ABC. The World Series will culminate the year-long celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Little League. For more information on the Series and to follow the action live, visit llbws.org.
