USA Baseball Names Dr. Fred Mueller Chair of Medical/Safety

Fred-Mueller Dr. Fred Mueller

USA Baseball announced today that Dr. Fred Mueller has been named as the Chairman of the organization’s prestigious Medical/Safety Advisory Committee.  Mueller assumes the leadership of the committee subsequent to the passing of Dr. Barry Goldberg in late September of 2007.  Goldberg worked with Yale University and served as the Committee Chair since its inception in 1993.

“USA Baseball was fortunate to have a man of Barry’s expertise and passion for the game of baseball lead this committee for so many years,” said USA Baseball President Mike Gaski.  “After serving with Barry for much of his tenure, we believe Dr. Mueller will continue the strong leadership of this outstanding group of contributors to our organization and members.”

A member of the USA Baseball Medical/Safety Advisory Committee since 1993, Frederick O. Mueller, Ph.D., is a professor of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He is also the Director of the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research and the Research Director for the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment.

“The work of this committee over the years has been invaluable in serving our membership and the sport in general in addressing safety concerns and initiatives,” added Executive Director/CEO Paul V. Seiler.  “We’re fortunate to have someone of Fred’s experience to lead this committee as we continue to remain committed to the health of our sport.”

Mueller is joined on the committee by the following members: Kenneth (Casey) Clarke (retired, sports injury researcher), Sandy Jones (Dixie Baseball), Elliot Hopkins (NFSHSA), Dr. James Andrews (ASMI, Birmingham), Dr. Glenn Fleisig (ASMI, Birmingham), Damani Leech (NCAA), Dr. James Ronai (Rehabilitation Associates, Inc.), John Sadler (Sadler Sports Insurance), Herndon Harding (Florida State University), and Laura Purser (USA Baseball Recent Athlete).

Over the course of the last 15 years, the USA Baseball Medical/Safety Advisory Committee has published a number of articles, and a list of current information can be found at:
