Collegiate Softball Programs to Host Little League Softball Days

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (March 21, 2007) – Little League Baseball and Softball will again team with the varsity softball programs at several colleges and universities throughout the United States to provide local Little League softball teams and volunteers an opportunity to attend a regular-season game and meet with the collegiate players and coaching staff.

In addition to these “Little League Softball Days,” Little League’s regional centers have offered softball-specific instructional programs to district administrators, local league officers, umpires, managers and coaches at clinics and seminars, in several U.S. states. For several years Little League has partnered with USA Softball Olympic gold medalist Michele Smith for a series of clinics sponsored by Musco Sports Lighting, the official sports lighting system of Little League.

For the second consecutive year, Baylor University in Waco, Texas, will host a Little League Softball Day.

On a Little League Softball Day, Little Leaguers, their parents and local league volunteers may attend the hosting institution’s regular-season game free of charge, or in some cases at a discounted rate. The players will come dressed in their Little League uniform jerseys, and following the games will be permitted onto the field to meet the collegiate players and coaches.

“As a way of recognizing Little League Softball, and in appreciation of the college softball experience, Little League International is reaching out to communities by having Little League Softball Days,” Stephen D. Keener, president and chief executive officer of Little League Baseball and Softball, said. “For the second straight year, this initiative will afford young athletes of all ages the chance to enjoy the game of softball at its finest. They will have the complete game experience from the warm-ups to game’s end.”

Last season, similar events were hosted by the University of Washington; St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas; Ohio’s Cleveland State University; the University of South Florida; and Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

There will be 11 Little League Softball Days this year between March 24 and May 5.

Little League Softball has more than 364,000 players worldwide and is played in nearly all U.S. states. Each summer, Little League International operates four World Series tournaments for softball, in which world champions in the divisions of Little League (ages 11-12), Junior League (13-14), Senior League (14-16) and Big League Softball (16-18) are crowned. Each of the championship games in those tournaments will be televised on ESPN or ESPN2.
