WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (July 31, 2007) – In 10 years as a Little League volunteer with the East Hampton Little League, in Montauk, N.Y., Michelle Foglia has not served on the local board of directors in an official capacity, but her work coordinating player registration, umpires assignments and managing countless other administrative duties has certainly not gone unnoticed. For her efforts and commitment to the players in her local league, Mrs. Foglia has been selected as the 2007 Little League Mom of the Year.

“I wasn’t expecting to be the only Mom of the Year,” Mrs. Foglia said. “When I found out I was the only one, I was shocked and so was my family. We all thought there had to be a Mom of the Year from each state, or something.

“I don’t want to coach, but I do well with paperwork, organizing and help out where I can,” Mrs. Foglia said. “I organize player sign-ups and the practice schedules, and I am also in charge of assigning umpires for the regular season and during all-stars.”

The Little League Mom of the Year Award was established in 1991 as a symbolic form of recognition and tribute to the millions of mothers in communities around the world who contribute their time to the Little League program.

“This year’s Mom of the Year did not come into Little League looking for accolades, but quickly earned the admiration of her fellow volunteers,” Stephen D. Keener, president and chief executive officer of Little League Baseball and Softball, said. “Appreciating the positive Little League experiences enjoyed by her sons and daughter, Mrs. Foglia continuously sets a positive example for those around her regardless of the role or responsibility. Her children, Andrew, Dallas and Sophia, are proud of their mother, as are the volunteers of East Hampton National Little League, and Little League International is pleased to honor her with this special award.”

Each year, Little League players are invited to compose an essay that explains why their mothers should be the Little League Mom of the Year. From that group, one Little League mother is selected. Nominated by Dallas and Sophia, Mrs. Foglia will receive the award at the Little League Baseball World Series in Williamsport, Pa., scheduled for Aug. 17-26.

“My mom has been involved in Little League for a long time, and she can take care of any problem,” Dallas Foglia, 12, wrote. “She represents our town and the East Hampton Little League like no other possibly could. She’s the best!”

“She is always organizing something,” Andrew Foglia, 16, said. “I know she does a lot for the league, but I didn’t think she did enough to qualify for this type of award. It’s pretty cool.”

Mrs. Foglia is an office manager for her family’s furniture store, and for the Albatross Hotel owned by Easthampton Little League coach Jim Daunt.

“Michelle is a multi-tasking type of person,” Mr. Daunt said. “I think she is more deserving of this award than anybody in Little League. Michelle doesn’t take credit for anything, she just does it. No matter the situation, she will iron it out in a nice, peaceful matter. It’s her behind-the-scenes work that makes our Little League run, and that’s were she’s at her best.”

Little League Baseball and Softball is the world’s largest organized youth sports program, with nearly 2.7 million players and one million adult volunteers in every U.S. state and scores of other countries.
