USA Softball Olympic Gold Medalist Michele Smith To Conduct Series of Little League Softball Clinics

Attendees look on as U.S. Olympic champion Michele Smith demonstrates the proper pitching stance. Five softball-only clinics, sponsored by Little League Baseball and Softball and Musco Lighting, will be held at each of Little League’s five regional centers in the United States.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (Nov. 22, 2005) – Little League Baseball and Softball is once again teaming up with USA Softball Olympic gold medalist Michele Smith for a series of clinics sponsored by Musco Sports Lighting, the official sports lighting system of Little League.

Each of Little League’s five regional centers in the United States have welcomed Ms. Smith in recent years as hosts of these one-day events that are open to all Little League managers, coaches, and league officials. The 2006 clinic dates are: Jan. 14 (Southern Region Headquarters, St. Petersburg, Fla.); Feb. 25 (Central Region Headquarters, Indianapolis); Feb. 26 (Eastern Region Headquarters, Bristol, Conn.); March 4 (Southwest Region Headquarters, Waco, Texas); March 5 (Western Region Headquarters, San Bernardino, Calif.).

Ms. Smith’s program offers training tips, skills and drills, and insight on how to improve a local league’s softball program.

“Michele Smith has supported Little League softball through these clinics, and has helped to foster the growth of the softball program for several years,” Stephen D. Keener, president and chief executive officer of Little League Baseball and Softball, said. “These worthwhile clinics offer practical advice to Little League volunteers, whether a veteran manager or a first-year coach. Through her relationship with Little League International, Ms. Smith’s expertise, perspective and experience have provided a wealth of information that continues to benefit the softball program.”

A heralded pitcher for the U.S. Olympic Softball Team, Ms. Smith helped Team USA to back-to-back gold medals in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. She also was a member of the 2002 U.S. national team that won gold at the U.S., and Canada Cups, and the International Softball Federation (ISF) world championships.

Little League Baseball and Softball is the world’s largest organized youth sports program, with nearly 2.7 million players and 1 million adult volunteers in every U.S. state and scores of other countries.
