Progeria Research Foundation Needs Your Help
Batter up! Everyone who meets Sam Berns can instantly recognize his love for baseball – from his energy on the field, to the endless factoids he’ll share about the sport, to his dedication for his beloved Red Sox. Though Sam has the spirit and joy of a 9-year-old, his body is far beyond its years because he has Progeria, a fatal rapid aging disease that causes children to die by their early teens from heart disease or stroke.
In 1999, Sam’s friends and family established The Progeria Research Foundation (PRF), and they need your help now more than ever. We are on the brink of the first PRF-funded drug trial for children with Progeria. We have identified a drug that may prevent, treat, or even cure Progeria, and PRF is currently raising the $2 million needed to fund this critical drug trial.
The Progeria Research Foundation is the only non-profit organization in the world whose mission is to find the cause, treatment and cure for Progeria. In just seven years, PRF has done a tremendous amount to help save these children. In 2003, PRF accomplished its first mission goal – identifying the gene that causes Progeria. Scientists now know that further research in this field can help us learn more about adult heart disease and the aging process that affects us all.
