Coaches Registry: A Great Learning Tool

By Sara Thompson, Little League Softball Manager

Have you ever wanted to know how the Major Leaguers learned a skill? Or how Michele Smith teaches softball players a rise ball? Ever had a question about an umpire’s call?

If the answer is: Yes to any of these questions, then Little League may have just the tool for you.

The Little League Coaches Registry package was created in 2007 to help managers and coaches improve their knowledge of baseball and softball, and learn how to become better teachers for a reasonable cost.

For 2010, the Coaches Registry presents separate packets for Baseball and Softball including sport-specific training DVDs and reading material. The baseball package allows coaches and managers to select two videos from the Play Ball! series, which includes tips from current Major Leaguers. The Softball package features Michele Smith’s recently-published training and practice guide along with a video covering basic skills and fundamentals.

In addition to instructional information, the registry provides coaches the ability to download the latest version of the Electronic Rulebook with clips explaining frequently misinterpreted rules. Members also receive a 2010 Rulebook, a Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) handbook with helpful tips on how to be a better coach, “What’s the Score” explaining how to score a game and a scorebook.

“We believe that many managers and coaches, regardless of their experience level or the skill level of their players, will appreciate having ready access to resources that can help them do a better job,” Nick Caringi, Director of Regional Operations and Education for at Little League Baseball and Softball, said. “The Coaches Registry will help them improve their coaching skills, make the games of baseball and softball more fun for the players, and improve the overall effectiveness of the league.”

On top of everything, members of the Coaches Registry receive deep discounts on almost every item purchased through the Little League® online store (www.LittleLeagueStore.net).
