South Lake Charles, Louisiana improves to 2-0 in Pool A with 9-0 win over Jeffersonville, Indiana

By Erin Kriner

The South Lake Charles, Louisiana All-Stars thought they had gotten a pretty good pitching performance from Kennon Fontenot Saturday vs. Mill Creek, Washington. Fontenot, after all, struck out 15 over 5.1 innings of one-run ball in a 5-1 victory.

The Southwest champs picked up another win Sunday vs. Jeffersonville, Indiana, this time behind a no-hitter from Trey Quinn. The 9-0 victory improved Louisiana’s record to 2-0 in Pool A play.

Quinn struck out twelve and allowed only two base runners (a walk and a hit batsman) in front of a crowd of 11,300 at Howard J. Lamade Stadium.

“Each of our pitchers has their own personality and style,” said Manager Charlie Phillips. “Trey commands both sides of the plate.”

And Quinn’s ability led to quick outs and a strong defensive performance.

Said pitching coach Dave Quinn: “Behind every great pitching performance there is a person working hard at the plate. It was a great effort on (catcher) Beau (Jordan)’s part.”

The Southwest offense came out strong in the first inning, scoring five runs on two hits. Beau Jordan’s RBI double opened the scoring, bringing home Quinn from second base. Then later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Nicolas Abshire was hit by a pitch to force in a run to make it 2-0.

In the second inning, Kennon Fontenot’s RBI triple made it 6-0. And in the fourth, the Southwest champs added two more to make it 9-0 with Beau Jordan’s RBI double and Anshire’s run-scoring single.

“Our strength is playing hard,” Louisiana Manager Charlie Phillips said. “We look to play hard the whole game.”

The Southwest looks to make it a perfect 3-0 in pool play on Tuesday, when they face the Mid-Atlantic champs from Hagerstown, Maryland.

The team from Jeffersonville, Indiana will look ahead to their next match up with Mill Creek, Washington at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
