As Little League® celebrates its 75th Anniversary at the 2014 Little League Baseball® World Series, the league representing the Mexico Region has won its way to compete in South Williamsport. In Monterey, Mexico, Guadalupe Linda Vista Little League from Guadalupe, Nuevo León, Mexico, near Monterey, captured the banner as Mexico Region Champions with the 12-6 win, defeating Félix Arce Little League from Tijuana, Baja California, on Friday, July 11. This will be the 28th time a team from Mexico will compete in the Little League Baseball World Series. Since 2001, the Mexico Region has received an automatic bid to the World Series.
“There is perhaps no other country outside the United States that has more World Series history than the teams from Mexico,” said Patrick Wilson, Little League® Baseball and Softball Senior Vice President and International Tournament Director. “The Little League programs from Mexico are always great competitors who display wonderful sportsmanship on and off the field. We’re excited to welcome Guadalupe Linda Vista Little League to South Williamsport this August.”
This is Guadalupe Linda Vista Little League’s third appearance in the 68-year history of the Little League Baseball World Series. In 1997, the league won the Championship Banner, which was the last time a team from Mexico won the Little League Baseball World Series. Linda Vista competed the following year, in the 1998 World Series. Their state of Nuevo León also has a rich Little League Baseball World Series history. In 1957 and 1958, a team from Monterey, the capital city of Nuevo León, became the first league in the history of the Little League Baseball World Series to win back-to-back championships, and the first non-U.S. team to win a championship banner. Angel Macias, who pitched with both his left and right hands, threw a perfect game to win the 1957 Little League Baseball World Series. His teammate, Jose Maiz Garcia, a Little League volunteer and Little League Hall of Excellence Enshrinee, served as the tournament organizer of the 2014 Little League Baseball Mexico Region Tournament.
