Little Leaguer® and Legend: Little League® Baseball and Softball Congratulates Mariano Rivera
One of the most respected and revered players in Major League Baseball, he has been celebrated at every stadium he’s visited this year, with presentations featuring everything from a rocking chair of broken bats to the MLB All Star Game MVP honors. But before Mariano Rivera became the best closer in MLB history, he was a Little Leaguer® for Barrio Colon Little League in La Chorrera, Panama.
Throughout his 19-year career, all with the New York Yankees, Mo transitioned from a starter to a set-up pitcher to the game’s most feared closer. He has set MLB records for most all-time saves (652), most career games pitched with a single team (1,115), lowest Postseason Career ERA (0.70) and many, many more.
On the field, Mr. Rivera has embodied the words of the Little League® Pledge. He has played fair. He has strived to win (and won a lot). And he has always done his best. Off the field, his philanthropic efforts to improve the lives of those living in poverty, shows Mr. Rivera’s courage, character and loyalty. Annually, he donates more than $500,000 to underprivileged children in the United States and Panama. During his farewell season, Major League Baseball teams donated nearly $200,000 to The Mariano Rivera Foundation, which will occupy much of Mo’s time during his retirement. Founded in July of 1998 by Mr. Rivera and his wife, Clara, the mission of The Mariano Rivera Foundation is to share with the community the blessings bestowed on them and their family.
Little League congratulates Mr. Rivera on a tremendous career on the mound, and wishes him the best of luck in bettering the world throughout his retirement.
