Little League Baseball World Series 2013

Chad Knight was dominate for Westport Little League, Conn., recording 14 of the his team’s 18 outs by strikeout in a 1-0 victory over Lincoln (R.I.) Little League in the New England Region Championship game at Leon Breen Field on Bristol, Conn., Saturday night.

Recording 65 strikes on 74 pitches for the one-hit, complete game victory, Knight also had a hand in the only run of the evening. In the bottom of the fifth inning and the game scoreless, Ricky Offenberg, hitting eighth, lined a double off the base of the left-field fence.

Drew Rogers followed with an infield single, placing runners on first and third. Dominic Cunha, Lincoln Little League’s starting pitcher had matched Knight’s strikeout performance, but needed several more pitches to do so.

After a strikeout of Chris Drbal on his 85th pitch, Cunha had reached his pitch count limit and gave way to reliever Steve Andrews. Max Popken drew a walk to load the bases with one out.

Knight followed with a chopper to third base, but a bobble by Lincoln Little League third baseman Zarek Larisa resulted in a fielder’s choice putout at third that allowed Offenberg to score the game's only run.

Through four innings of the New England Region Championship, Knight and Cunha had nine strike outs each and neither pitcher had surrendered at hit. Into the sixth inning, Knight remained dominant having thrown only 61 pitches. The lone hit he allowed came on a bunt single in the fifth inning by Patrick Gribbin.
